Big blow to insurgents: An undated photo of Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud. Reports indicate that Mehsud, one of the most wanted men on earth, may have been killed in a US drone attack in South Waziristan. Reacting to the reports, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said, "According to my information, this news is correct and he (Mehsud) has been taken out. Our reports are based on the internal intelligence inputs. We will be 100 per cent sure when we get the physical verification."
The US, however, says it cannot confirm the killing of Mehsud but added that the people of Pakistan are now safer if reports are accurate. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Friday: "We cannot confirm whether he is dead. There seems to be a growing consensus among credible observers that he is indeed dead."
If confirmed, Mehsud's demise would be a major boost to Pakistani and U.S. efforts to eradicate the Taliban and Al-Qaida. (PTI Photo)
